Carifesta, the Caribbean Festival of Arts, is a premier multi-disciplinary arts festival celebrating the diverse cultural expressions of the Caribbean. The festival was first conceived in the late 1960s as a platform to showcase the region's rich artistic traditions and foster unity among its nations.

The inaugural Carifesta was held in Guyana in 1972, under the theme "The Artist in Development of the Nation." It featured participants from over 30 Caribbean countries and territories, as well as guests from Latin America, Europe, and Africa. This landmark event highlighted the vibrancy of Caribbean music, dance, theater, literature, visual arts, and culinary traditions.

Since its inception, Carifesta has been hosted in various Caribbean nations, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and Suriname. The festival aims to celebrate shared cultural heritage while allowing each country to showcase its unique identity.

Carifesta remains an enduring symbol of regional solidarity and creativity, attracting thousands of artists, performers, and cultural enthusiasts from across the Caribbean and beyond. It continues to be a vital platform for artistic exchange and a celebration of the Caribbean's rich and diverse culture.
