Q&A with Aisha

NOBODY BE SAFE with rising star, Aisha coming through!  Aisha’s music is a fine blend of Caribbean influences. Her genre of choice for this track is soca. Her budding music career spans just over one year but she has already visited Colombia, performed at numerous events, written bilingual songs and recently released her first single, “Nobody Be Safe”, produced by Ballistik Boyz.

Aisha is not just another pretty face but holds a Bachelors in International Relations with a minor in Psychology and like a true St. Josephs’ Convent (San Fernando) girl, she graduated from The University of The West Indies (U.W.I.) with honors. She is an independent, young woman with a “go getta” attitude and offers a unique perspective on music and life.

Q1. What was the moment that you decided to become an artiste?

My experience in Colombia was a period for me to be away from my family and friends to try to figure out what exactly I wanted to do. I am the type of person who is interested in everything. Moving from one thing to the next, so it was hard for me to dial down to one career path.

While at U.W.I. I realized my love for music. I told my mom about it and how I felt, and she convinced me to push through, persevere and finish my degree because it was my last year. My family is more academically oriented but I thought it was important to choose something that I loved and not just because of the money I could make from it. It would have been easier for me to choose a career like law because that is what my mom does but I am not one to choose the easy route anyway and I wanted to do something that I was passionate about.

I spent five months in Colombia and had to stop pretending that music and songwriting was not a part of who I am as a person. That’s when I decided that when I return to Trinidad that I was going to get serious about what I really wanted to do.

Q2. What would you consider as your biggest achievement as an artist so far in your career?

Releasing my first single, “Nobody Be Safe” on 2nd August 2018.

Q3: What was the worst moment that you experienced as an artiste?

I did not get the chance to perform as I would have liked to at a charity event. (The event will remain unnamed). I made the time and the effort to be there and the M.C. left before I could perform. The organizer didn’t say anything to indicate any change in the order of events. I got mosquito bites because the venue’s grass was freshly cut. I brought my entire band, so the event coordinators wasted more than just my time. It also rained on top of everything else, but we still gave a show because that’s what we went there to do. Good things happened after though.

Q4: What is your favorite moment as an artiste?

Every performance is a favorite moment. Presenting yourself to people and having them appreciate your artistry and you for doing what you love.

Q5: What is your pet peeve?

Closed-mindedness.

Q6: Whom do you admire the most?

My mom, Martha St. Hillaire Noel.

Q7: What is your favourite dish?

Bake and shark. Don’t forget the tamarind sauce.

Q8: Apart from music, what do you like to do?

Dance, I love Latin dance. I love to watch movies. I prefer action, comedy and romance but absolutely no horror movies!

Q9: What is the best advice that you ever received? Who gave it to you?

“Follow your passion. “ – A motivational speaker who visited St. Josephs’ Convent, San Fernando while I was a student there.

Q10: What do you think are the qualities required to become a successful artiste?

You must be persistent, talented, motivated and strong-willed.

Q11. What are your goals as an artiste in the future?

To be well-known internationally as an artiste from T&T. “Always repping that 868!”

Q12. What advice do you have for aspiring artistes?

Don’t be afraid, follow your heart. How do you see yourself? Don’t be concerned about what other people may think. Do things based on how you see the world and not how someone else tells you to view the world. They might see it in black and white, but you might just be able to add some colour. If you want something, go get it!
